The Great Chip War

Two years ago, I wrote a blog titled “The Great Chip War and its Impact on Western Technology and Society (link provided below).” In it, I outlined three critical challenges for U.S. chip manufacturers: supply chain resilience, human capital development, and the geopolitical implications of intellectual property controls.
I argued that while progress in domestic chip fabrication and talent development is promising, the complex interdependence of global supply chains and restrictive IP policies could hinder innovation. Overregulation, I warned, risks creating alternative ecosystems that challenge the West’s technological dominance. History offers a lesson—restricting the printing press for 200 years slowed knowledge sharing and societal advancement.
Fast forward to today: the buzz around Deepseek’s AI advancements validates these concerns. The narrative that competitors were “two years behind in AI” and “ten years behind in chip manufacturing” is now being challenged. As explanations and reassessments emerge, one truth becomes clear: self-aggrandizing echo chambers and hubris remain the greatest threats to the West’s progress.
Furthermore it is important to realize that innovation can come from many angles. The belief that the Valley's capital intensive model is a structurally efficient model has been shattered. The billions in capital raise humbled by $6-8 million is self-evident. Innovation around AI will come from many corners, from data innovation, application innovation, model innovation, optimization strategies and infrastructure. Sweating older technology because necessity becomes the mother of invention will drive innovation in its own right.
We’re at a critical crossroads: One path inspires moonshot innovation, driven by optimism and belief in our capabilities. The other, led by fear and exclusion, fosters a short-term “us vs. them” mindset, accelerating the very dynamics we aim to avoid. Navigating this complex dynamic demands bold leadership and nuanced policy-making—qualities I fear are currently in short supply.
The time for collaboration, shared-innovation, and forward-thinking strategies is now. Let’s ensure we don’t fall into the traps of history.
